Church Overview

The present Springburn Parish Church, that sits in its prominent spot at the crossroads of Atlas Road and Springburn Way, held its dedication ceremony, led by the then Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, on the 15th May 1981. It was constructed to house the congregations of seven historic local churches that had been closed in the preceding years or were in the process of closing, due to falling congregational numbers and urban clearance activities in this area of Glasgow.

After many years of negotiation with the local authority for compensation for compulsorily purchased church properties, a committee was formed to identify an agreeable site to all congregations and a style of building that was within their limited financial means. The new church was built from pre-cast concrete slabs with, a red brick facing, by the Leeds firm Stock Bros Ltd, who had recently also built St Andrew’s Church of Scotland in Johnstone from the same pre-fabricated materials. The internal designs were overseen by Glasgow architect Neil Jack of the firm of Miller and Black.

At the instigation of the architect, many items of furniture and some panels of stained glass were relocated from the closing churches and installed in the new building. Two beautiful windows, illustrating scenes from the life of St Peter by the noted Glasgow artist William Sutherland, came from the former Wellfield Parish and Springburn North Hill Churches. The pulpit and pews came from Westfield, the font from Springburn North Hill, the Communion Table and lectern from Sighthill, praise-boards from Wellfield and a table from Johnston Parish Church.

Today the church provides, in addition to regular weekly services, a number of community spaces that are well utilised by local groups and organisations, including the local food hub.
