Church Overview

There has been a Christian presence on this site for a long time, with fragments of the current church thought to date from around 1200. The medieval church was extended and remodelled in 1532, with an entrance inserted from Cove Wynd. The Tolbooth Tower and the Bailies Loft were post-Reformation additions, erected in 1588 during a major rebuild.

The interior was significantly refurbished in 1883 by local architect James Brown in a contemporary Victorian style, with a new entrance, galleries and stairs inserted. It possesses some fine examples of stained glass by artists William Wilson and John Blyth of the 1950s and 1960s. The church bell dates from 1662, while the clock in the tower is a fine example by Regency era, local clockmaker John Smith. The town’s 17th century Mercat Cross is located next to the Tolbooth Tower entrance.
