Church Overview

This landmark Gothic church was built for the local United Presbyterian congregation 1878-79, to the designs of the renowned architectural practice of Robert Thornton Shiells and James M. Thomson, with a four stage square corner tower and a handsome rose window above its door.

The building was given its current name following the 1900 union of United Presbyterian Church and the Free Church of Scotland, to honour the Rev Henry Angus Paterson, who ministered to the community of Stonehouse for over 60 years. The building remained a United Free Church following the denomination’s merger with the Church of Scotland in 1929.

It was substantially refurbished following a devastating fire in 1977, much of its original interior was lost, but some furnishings survived, including some 19th century stained glass and the carved timber reredos. As part of the restoration work a fine collection of stained glass windows by the Scottish artist Crear McCartney was installed.

The church was closed by the United Free Church in 2024, partially refurbished and marketed for sale in December 2025.
