Church Overview
A beautiful cruciform, Gothic church, consisting of nave, aisles, transepts and chancel, built to the designs of noted Scottish architect William Leiper in 1887 in red Ballochmyle sandstone.
Inside, its floodlit timber vaulted interior roof, highlights the bold columns with their richly carved capitals that tower over the gleaming terrazzo floor below. It also possessed its original furnishings, including a beautiful marble pulpit and communion table and an important Henry Willis pipe organ, dating from 1887.
The whole building is complemented by a collection of stunning stained glass, with windows by a variety of celebrated artists including Norman MacDougall (1889), Douglas Strachan (1921), Douglas Hamilton (1930), Gordon Webster (1961), William Wilson (1962), Sax Shaw (1968), Paul Lucky (1984) and Rab MacInnes (1999). Additionally three windows by Oscar Paterson, dating from 1897, that were moved here from St Bride’s Church in Partick after it closed in 1975.
Latterly known as the Kingsborough Gardens Sanctuary, part of a union with the congregation of Broomhill Parish Church, the A-listed church was closed and marketed for sale by Church of Scotland in 2023 during a period of rationalisation of the denomination’s nationwide property portfolio. Plans were submitted in the summer of 2025 to convert the landmark building into bar, restaurant and community facility.
Church closed in 2023. Now in private ownership
