Church Overview
This kirk probably occupies the site of a 7th-century monastery founded by Lindisfarne Priory. The present building dates from 11th century and has a fine 12th-century south door.
Its interior was substantially remodelled in 1893 by noted Victorian church architect Peter MacGregor Chalmers, except for the splendid Hopetoun Loft of 1707, which was designed by Sir William Bruce with carving by William Eizat and a handsome heraldic ceiling painted by Richard Waitt.
The Duddingston burial aisle dates to 1603, the Binns aisle to 1618. The Philipstoun burial enclosure of 1723 and the Hopetoun aisle 1707 both have fine mural monuments.
The micro-museum located in the former session house in the kirkyard outside contains a variety of remarkable early-medieval carved stones, including Anglian, Pictish and Viking era pieces in whole or fragmentary form.
Latterly part of a united congregation with Kingscavil and Winchburgh Churches, this historic church was sold in a private sale in March 2025 to the Hopetoun Estates as part of a nationwide rationalisation programme of churches and other properties by the Church of Scotland.
